Search Engine Optimization

There seems to be a lot of consufion out there as to what will actually increase your search engine visibilty. It can be a very difficult task to get good rankings on major search engines such as Google and Yahoo. Competition is fierce and unless your website is spefic to an area or unique product or service your chances of appearing as first in line as slim to none. However, that doesn't mean you don't stand a chance. Follow the guidelines below and we promise you results!

  • Coding Methods & Standards

Your coding methods are crucial. Using a template based or pre-made website building tool will already kick you down a couple of notches. Using proper web standards and header hierarchy is VERY important. If you need assistance with checking your website for coding errors, please advise our build page. If you are having trouble validating your web pages or cannot figure out how to fix an error, please contact us and let us know the issue (providing the error and a URL).

  • Title Tags

Your title tags on every page (<title>This content </title>) should be descriptive and to the point. They should include your navigation trail as well as a general description of the company and/or page. Keep it under 65 characters if possible. If you look at our title for this page you will see: 'seo | weburge | complete website building assistance' as you can see we start out with the page name, followed by the website and finishing a brief description of the website. The follows a specific heirarchy which can be reversed but should include the same type of information.

  • Meta Tags

While Meta Keywords have significantly reduced in significance, we still believe that it is good to have as many relevant keywords as possible. However, a good Meta description is CRUCIAL. Be sure to be very descriptive and to the point. A good description will include a summary of the website's purpose as well as a brief explanation of the page itself.

  • Webpage Content

Good content is probably just as important as the other subjects. Having readable, relevant and important content will not only provide fuel for search engines but also keep your visitors interested and more visitors = better rankings. Avoid duplicating content! Blogs are also a great way to keep your content fresh and visitors coming!

  • Internal Links

Include page to page links as well as a good navigation. Having links in your content that lead to other pages on your site is very important. Any pages that are not linked will not be crawled by search engines!

  • Images

Images cannot not interpreted by search engines and should be used as little as possible. Any content or images that can be handled with selectable text should be. If you have to use an image, always enter an alt an/or title tag in your image source. (<img src="source.gif" alt="This image is of something" title="A title of the image" />). Image replacement is also a great idea.

  • External Links

Try to get some links of your site where ever possible. Make deals with other people, use Google AdWords, AdSense, etc etc. Whatever you do, do NOT spam people, blogs or other websites with your website information. This will not only get your website blacklisted but will also piss some people off and you never know what those people can accomplish.

  • Sitemaps

Having a sitemap will ensure that search engines crawl every page on your website. Be sure to include a link to your sitemap, preferably in the footer.
